Brown family papers, 1857-circa 1960 (bulk 1857-1872).

This collection consists of twenty-one (21) items, the bulk of which are letters written by various Brown family members to Mrs. Orlando Brown (Mary Cordelia Upshaw Price Brodhead Brown) from 1857 to 1872. Letters include four (4) from her husband Orlando Brown, Sr., and individual letters from her children Orlando Brown, Jr., Mason P. Brown, Bonnie Brodhead Todd, Blandina (Bland) Brodhead Temple, and Cordelia Brodhead Pythian. There are also two (2) letters, one from T. P. Atticus Bibb, and one from E. S. Norris written to Mary Cordelia Brown. An undated and unsigned, partial Brown family letter is also included. The Brown family letters discuss general family and household news including health, death and childbirths; housekeeping and maintenance; information about the family's African American servants; travel; area religious services; news about Frankfort, Kentucky, including a description of a violent storm that toppled the last remaining of the original trees on the Frankfort town plat; and one letter from Mason P. Brown, dated October 14, 1867, mentioning a possible appropriation of money for a statehouse and new Governor's Mansion. An 1869 funeral notice for Bonnie Brodhead Todd is also included. Miscellaneous items in this collection include two (2) postcards of Frankfort, Kentucky landmarks, a magazine advertisement for Old Crow Bourbon, and two (2) letters written in 1957 by Mrs. S. I. M. Major (Agnes) to Mrs. A. S. Thompson of the Orlando Brown House, regarding these Brown family letters' provenance.

Orlando Brown was born September 26, 1801, in Frankfort, Kentucky, to John and Margaretta Brown. He is a descendent of John Preston of Londonderry (now Northern Ireland) through his father's mother, Margaret Preston. He received an A.B. from Princeton and a law degree from Transylvania University. Brown practiced law in Alabama, but returned to Kentucky and became joint proprietor and editor of the FRANKFORT COMMONWEALTH.
